Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Warning
Caution — Service soon
What It Means
The diesel particulate filter is becoming clogged with soot and needs regeneration. If ignored, the DPF can become irreversibly blocked, requiring expensive replacement. This light primarily affects modern diesel vehicles (2009+).
Common Causes
- Frequent short trips preventing automatic DPF regeneration
- Interrupted regeneration cycles (turning engine off mid-cycle)
- Faulty EGR system increasing soot production
- Faulty DPF pressure sensor
- Wrong engine oil (must use low-SAPS oil for DPF-equipped diesels)
- Turbocharger leaking oil into exhaust
Can I Still Drive?
Yes — but perform a forced regeneration as soon as possible: drive at highway speeds (55+ mph) for 20-30 minutes at 2,500+ RPM. Avoid short trips until the light clears. If the light begins flashing or turns red, the DPF is critically blocked — do not continue driving; have it professionally cleaned.
