Electric Vehicle System Warning (EV/Hybrid)
Critical — Stop driving
What It Means
The high-voltage electric drive system has a fault. This can affect the traction battery, electric motor, power electronics, or charging system. The vehicle may have reduced power, may not charge, or may not start.
Common Causes
- High-voltage battery fault (cell imbalance, degradation)
- Power inverter/DC-DC converter fault
- Electric motor or drive unit fault
- Charging system fault (onboard charger, charging port)
- Battery thermal management system fault
- 12V auxiliary battery low (EVs still use a 12V battery for electronics)
Can I Still Drive?
If the vehicle starts: drive directly to a dealer or EV specialist. If the vehicle will not start or displays a 'Stop Safely' message: pull over and call for a tow. High-voltage system repairs must be performed by qualified technicians — do not attempt DIY on the HV system (lethal voltages, 400V-800V).
Estimated Repair Cost
$200 – $15,000
This is an estimate only. Actual costs vary by vehicle make, model, year, location, and shop labor rates. Always get multiple quotes for major repairs.
