Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
Caution — Service soon
What It Means
The electric parking brake has a fault or needs service. The parking brake may not engage or disengage properly. In some vehicles, a flashing EPB light indicates the parking brake is in service/maintenance mode for brake pad replacement.
Common Causes
- Parking brake not fully engaged or disengaged
- EPB actuator motor fault
- Rear brake pads worn below minimum (EPB needs service mode for replacement)
- EPB control module fault
- Low battery voltage affecting EPB operation
- Parking brake cable seized (older hybrid systems)
Can I Still Drive?
If the parking brake is fully released and the vehicle moves freely: yes, but have it checked soon. If the parking brake won't release or the vehicle feels held back: do not drive — towing with a partially engaged parking brake will destroy the rear brakes.
