Reduced Engine Power / Limp Mode
Critical — Stop driving
What It Means
The engine ECU has detected a serious fault and has limited engine output to protect the engine, transmission, or emissions system. The vehicle may have severely reduced acceleration and limited top speed. This is sometimes called 'limp home mode.'
Common Causes
- Throttle body or accelerator pedal position sensor fault
- Turbocharger overboost or underboost
- Transmission fault (especially CVT or DCT)
- Severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter
- Critical sensor failure (MAF, MAP, crank position)
- Electrical system fault (low system voltage)
Can I Still Drive?
Yes, but with reduced power — you may be limited to 30-45 mph. Drive directly to a safe location or a repair shop. Do not attempt highway driving or towing. Restarting the vehicle may temporarily clear the condition but it will return if the fault persists.
Estimated Repair Cost
$100 – $3,000
This is an estimate only. Actual costs vary by vehicle make, model, year, location, and shop labor rates. Always get multiple quotes for major repairs.
