Transmission Temperature Warning
Critical — Stop driving
What It Means
Transmission fluid temperature has exceeded safe operating range. Overheated transmission fluid loses its lubricating properties and can cause permanent damage to clutches, bands, and seals. This is most common when towing heavy loads or in stop-and-go traffic in hot weather.
Common Causes
- Towing beyond vehicle's rated capacity
- Low transmission fluid level
- Old or degraded transmission fluid
- Transmission cooler restricted or blocked
- Torque converter failing (generating excess heat)
- Slipping transmission (internal wear)
Can I Still Drive?
Pull over safely, place in Park or Neutral, and let the engine idle for 10-15 minutes to circulate fluid through the cooler. Do NOT shut off the engine immediately — idling in Park cools the transmission faster. If the light comes on frequently, have the transmission serviced. Consider installing an auxiliary transmission cooler for towing.
