Am I running too rich?

I knew i was running rich when I got this car but it's this soot in the tail pipes an indicating if it running TOO rich? I've gotta get the car tuned but it's this okay to drive in the meantime? It makes the occasional loud backfire but it runs good, steady idle, and no abnormal noises. Oil also looks good as well. I just don't want this fuel to wash my cylinders and I end up screwing something else up.
