To get into more detail, my dad got this prius v for free that has been sitting in someone's garage for over a year. It was clear the engine had a lot of problems with misfires and such. My dad believed it was a clogged egr and intake manifold causing the issue as is common with these priuses. After he put that back together, he added coolant because it was low, but regardless how much he put in, it kept going down to the min line. He started it up and texts me the engine won't stay running and keeps sputtering out and sends me this video. Im like 95%sure at this point that it's a head gasket leak. So for now, I told him to get a compression tester for the head gasket. So my questions are as follows
what are the odds he bent a rod / warped a block or head / did irreparable damage to the engine?
im a beginner hobby mechanic. The most complicated thing I've done is swap a few cv axles, brakes rotors, and all the fluid changes. am I biting off more than I can chew if I start this? I'm currently watching a video right now.
watching the video, it recommends i get a shop to check if the head needs to be lapped and check if there is any warping. As well as getting the valves isnpected. How much does this cost, and how long does it usually take? And what do i ask for at the shop?
please let me know if there is anything else I should be aware of.
4+) i see the timing chain is easily accessible while doing this. Should I change this while I'm at it? And is there any other parts I should consider replacing while I'm here? I did all the fluids and it's clear that it's been very neglected with 150k miles on it.
